I’ve called this the story that won’t die for years, so I’ll stop now.
After Read-Only Memory published 500 Years Later, Third Editions got in touch and wanted to translate it into French. Which sounded great. My only hesitation was that many of the subjects in the book originally spoke Japanese in their interviews, so to do a French translation based on an English translation of those quotes seemed less than ideal. And we didn’t have the time to track down all the original quotes to translate directly from the Japanese audio files.
We kicked around a few ideas on how to avoid errors, and came to the conclusion that the most important thing was to disclose the process, so we asked Third Editions to include a disclaimer that all of the quotes had been translated from English.
I haven’t actually seen the final book yet (and don’t speak French), but the book looks nice in photos.
