As part of Polygon’s Culture Shock package, I spent a long time working through the details of what happened when Microsoft recalled the Xbox game Kakuto Chojin.
I broke one of my rules on this one — I typically try to avoid spending a lot of time on stories that have been covered extensively elsewhere. But as I was doing some calls to feel out potential Culture Shock ideas, I talked to one of the main people involved with the recall and I realized there was quite a bit more to say. That sent me on a few months of trying to find everyone else involved, talking to people from all over, digging up internal documents, buying 10 copies of the game off eBay, and working with Arabic and Japanese translators.
